Between April and September 2026, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in partnership with the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) and provincial governments, supported the delivery of Provincial Road Safety Workshops across all seven provinces of Nepal as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety governance and implementation.

Held in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim Provinces, the workshops brought together 1,241 participants from provincial and local governments, enforcement agencies, transport stakeholders, academia, civil society, development partners, and the media. The strong and diverse participation reflected a growing shared commitment to making Nepal's roads safer for everyone.

Technical sessions covered national and provincial road safety data, the Federal Road Safety Act, the National Road Safety Action Plan (NRSAP) 2021-2030, and provincial priorities. Through panel discussions and interactive exercises, participants examined practical road safety cases, shared lessons from current initiatives, and identified priority actions to support context-specific road safety improvement plans.

A key theme emerging across the workshops was the vital role of provincial governments in translating national road safety policies and the NRSAP 2021-2030 into effective planning and implementation, while local governments are essential in delivering community-based road safety initiatives. Strong participation from Nepal Police, Traffic Police, and the Armed Police Force also highlighted the importance of enforcement and crash response in saving lives and reducing serious injuries. 

Discussions emphasized the need for stronger coordination across federal, provincial, and local levels, improved road safety data systems, enhanced enforcement, safer infrastructure, and greater public awareness. The workshops concluded with province-specific recommendations that will be consolidated and presented at a federal-level road safety workshop, helping to shape more coordinated and sustainable road safety initiatives across Nepal.

Beyond the recommendations produced, the workshops strengthened collaboration among stakeholders and reinforced a shared determination to reduce road crash fatalities and injuries, ensuring that road safety remains a priority for communities across the country.
