APRSO Shares Data-Driven Pathways for Safer, More Inclusive Road Transport in Fiji
The Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) took part in national discussions in Fiji on safer and more inclusive transport systems during the National Transport Infrastructure Consultative Forum, jointly convened by the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport (MPWMST) and UNESCAP. The forum was held from 15–16 January 2026 at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
Priti Gautam, Senior Transport Specialist and Road Safety Lead at the Asian Development Bank, representing the APRSO Secretariat, joined the session virtually to share insights from recent APRSO-supported work in Fiji, including a Safe System Maturity Assessment and a Crash Data Review.
The presentation reached a wide audience of government agencies, development partners, and transport sector stakeholders, and focused on how existing evidence can better inform transport planning and investment decisions.
Findings from the Safe System Maturity Assessment highlighted practical opportunities for Fiji to build on current initiatives and expand the use of road safety interventons that have been proven to reduce the risk of road traffic injuries and fatalities. These included wider application of well-designed roundabouts, crash barriers, speed cameras, and traffic calming infrastructure such as speed humps and raised pedestrian crossings.
The Crash Data Review, meanwhile, pointed to opportunities to strengthen analytical capacity across the Fiji government, supporting more accurate identification of high-risk locations where road users are likely to be involved in road crashes, and more targeted prioritization of road safety investments.
APRSO’s contribution formed part of a dedicated session on Inclusive Land Transport Infrastructure, Mobility, and Urban Planning.
