Second Series Concludes with a Spotlight on Travel Speed Reduction

On 8 July 2025, the fifth and final session of the Road Safety Capacity Building Program webinar series was held. The series, Innovations in Safe and Sustainable Transport: Road Safety as part of Liveable & Resilient Cities, is co-presented by the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the CAREC program. 

 

The final session of the program gathered 158 online participants. The discussion focused on the integral role of travel speed reduction in urban settings to support co-beneficial outcomes relating to safety, active mobility, clean air, access to education and employment.

Specifically, the panel explored on:

✅ Safety benefits of speed reduction

✅ Pathways to encouraging active mobility through lower speeds

✅ Opportunities for enhanced education and employment through lower speeds

✅ Case study examples

 

Celal Tolga İmamoğlu, the Senior Manager for Transport and Road Safety at WRI Türkiye provided an overview of how street design can help with speed reduction and safer cities. Yahaya Ahmad, the Head of Passenger Vehicle and Occupant Safety Unit, Vehicle Safety and Biomechanics Centre at MIROS spoke about safer vehicles and speed management for liveable cities. The session was moderated by Jessica Truong, Director of Lӧsningar, and included active participant engagement through Q&A and topical polls.

The grant fund for this series was received from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and Pacific (JFPR), financed by the Government of Japan through ADB.
